Gandugiri!

gandhigiri?

I know that this is the second time I'm picking out Sanjay Dutt for ridicule, it's not that i don't like tha guy, frankly i don't really have an opinion about him either way.
Sanjay Dutt, released his newest movie Lage Raho Munnabhai recently. The movie has recieved a lot of praise for its attempts at promoting Gandhism ie. nonviolence. Dutt as being hailed as the the new messiah of Gandhism, few notice however that the release of the movie coincided nicely with the his court appearences for posession of several AK-47's. Hardly a Gandhian.
Gandhigiri as they refer to it the Gandhian philosophy in the movie roughly means; to act according to that particular way of life. It is derived from the word Dadagiri ie. to act like a bully/ rowdy or to generally behave as a roughneck. Here the suffix giri implies acting according to a particular stereotype. Methinks Sanjay Dutt would be more credible promoting Gandugiri; or the act of behaving like an ass (slang).

Hmmm... There may be a stark difference between his real life and his 'reel' life but then that doesn't necessary mean that he has no right to promote 'gandhigiri' or act in a movie that promotes it. It is after all his job. Besides that, like it or not, he is star and a famous personality. He has influence over a huge population of star struck people. If they get influenced by his 'gandhigiri' and take renewed interest in our long forgotten father of the nation, then I don't really see a problem in that. Its better than they getting influenced by his passion for AK-47s ! Its hipocritical, yes. But then we don't live in an ideal world.

Ainz, i know what you are saying but personally i find this level of hypocrisy repulsive. Actually i have more of a problem with those elevating him to the position of a Gandhian than with Dutt himself. He is an actor and can't help but play roles given to him. Also i welcome this renewed interest in gandhianism in the country an i feel that it is what we really need.
BUT lets keep things in perspective, remember that he's only an actor. We have a tendancy to work ourselves into a frenzy around everyone even remotely successful.
As always, thanks for taking the time out to read and comment.

Haven't seen the movie yet,so can't say anything, but according to a daily, the public finds the hype and hoopla about the film and "Gandhigiri" highly irrelevent.

Animika, i dont know for sure about that, TV news channels are taking it pretty seriously, everyone is talking about Gandhigiri. You couldn't turn on the tv without someone or the other debating, or gassing on about it. As to whether the public is actually responding i don't know but there is a lot of hype surrounding the issue.

That is interesting. Funny how hypocrite actors are everywhere. Here in the U.S. it makes me so mad when I see commercials where actors ask us to give money to the poor and then you see them in a magazine the next day in a million dollar dress. Annoying!!

I killed a spider in my car yesterday...I am sorry Mr. Spider...but it was either you or me.

Indian Lucifer, elaborate please.

Jill, its not so much the actor that i'm frustrated with, rather it is us the general public. We in India get so carried away with celebrity that we are willing to forget everything people do. That's why we have so many criminals in parliment. The actor in question may act in whatever movie he wants to but then to call him a gandhian is a bit too much.

Confusion, no say it aint so. Not a spider. Damn! Haha

Due to the lack of proper people to worship, people end up worshipping actors... hehhehe, I'm ticked by the word 'gandugiri', though

nah its nothin agianst the gandugiri connection... but the whole shit... i doubt that people will think that "bapu giri" is "cool" rather... lead in more royalic hate to Mr. Ghandi.. who is standing next to me in hell... hah

Kartik said...

Terra, thanks. hehe my profane little mind is full of dirty little phrases like that.

Indian Lucifer, like anamika said in a previous comment, gandhigiri may not have made much of an impact. That's pretty sad in my opinion, cos esp in india we could really do with a little nonviolence i think

Darn U man. Can't even take the movie in to consideration as a good thing to see Gandhi-ism where people in today's life have actually forgot who Gandhi was.U should not forget that Sanjay Dutt is an actor by choice and he's destined to act the roles he gets. He's as normal as like any other who likes Gandhi.LRMB has given a name to Gandhi-ism as Gandhigiri. There nothing wrong to take the good in it and follow that.I stand by my word and I would live and die for it.I support Sanjay Dutt bhai, who are U to judge him whether he has committed a crime or not.Let God only judge him.He has suffered enough. Can U take his one day pain.Everyone has got their own passion on various thing.AK-47 is not a passion of his.Its out of communal riots that he feared his family's existence,he
got the guns.He got threatening calls that his sister would be raped and they would hack his entire family,so that is how he came in to possession of AK-47.Everyone who take Sanjay Dutt to be criminal should go to his website and hear his own version as what had actually happened and how was he linked to bobmay bomb blasts and AK-47. Excuse me if I hurt anybody.
